The Allegheny County Health Department reported two flu-related deaths, bringing the total this season to 12.
Both were males in their early 80s, with one death occurring in mid-January and the other in late February, health officials said Tuesday.
The county receives its data on flu-related deaths from the Pennsylvania Department of Health, which explains the reporting lag.
Although flu activity is winding down in a season that typically runs September through May, health officials warn the flu is still circulating and recommend a vaccination for those who have not yet gotten a flu shot.
This season has been relatively mild compared to last year, which saw 31 flu-related deaths in Allegheny County.
Older residents and children are most at risk of developing flu-related complications such as pneumonia, bronchitis and sinus and ear infections that can result in hospitalization.
