The North Hills School Board and the union representing the district’s teachers have approved a five-year contract.

The agreement calls for about half of the district’s 365 teachers to receive average pay increase of 3.48 percent each year.

The 185 teachers at the top of the district’s salary scale will receive pay hikes of 1.63 percent or less in each of the five years.

Teachers also will have to pay more toward their health insurance.

The contract was ratified by the union’s membership on April 3. The pact was approved by the school board on April 4.

“We are pleased that our district and its teachers could work together to reach an agreement that is equitable for all parties involved,” said Ed Wielgus, president of the school board.

“Balancing the needs of our taxpayers along with the needs of our district employees can be a challenge, but I am proud that we were able to find a compromise that satisfies our employees and maintains the district’s fiscally responsible ideals,” Wielgus said.

The district and the union began negotiations for the new contract in mid-2018. The previous five-year contract was scheduled to expire on Aug. 23.
