Started in 2004 by the International Association of Skateboard Companies, Go Skateboard Day — June 21 — celebrates the summer solstice by encouraging skaters to make their favorite sport a top priority.

Started in the late 1940s as a way for surfers to enjoy days without waves, skateboarding has more than 11 million enthusiasts and fuels a nearly $5 billion industry.

Skateboarding will be featured in the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

The area boasts a large number of privately owned and municipal skateparks, including:

• Boyce Action Park, Plum

• McKinley Skatepark, Beltzhoover

• Peach Plaza Skatepark, Hempfield

• Penn Hills Extreme Skatepark, Penn Hills

• Penn Township Skatepark, Harrison City

• The Wheel Mill, Homewood

• West Penn Skatepark, Polish Hill

• Switch and Signal, Swissvale

• Pitcher Park, Carnegie
