North Hills residents looking to delve deeper into their family history can get free advice on how to use newspapers in their genealogical quests.
The North Hills Genealogists Club is hosting a free program titled “All the News that’s Fit to Print: Using Newspapers in Your Research” Aug. 19 at La Roche University’s Kearns Spirituality Center.
“Many genealogists search for obituaries in newspapers, but don’t realize that they can find a wealth of other information in this resource,” said researcher Amy E. K. Arner, who will present the program. “I’ll talk about what kinds of information researchers can find in newspapers and how they can use that information to put their ancestors into historical context.”
Arner, who serves on the board board of directors for the Association of Professional Genealogists, specializes in Western Pennsylvania research and the editing of genealogical works.
The program will be the first the club is holding at its new meeting location at La Roche. The La Roche event also marks a change in the club’s meeting day, which will be on the third Monday of each month instead of the third Tuesday.
The change in location from Northland Public Library to La Roche was made to handle “our continued growth,” according to a posting on the club’s website.
Registration for the program, which runs from 6:45 to 9 p.m., is being handled through the library’s online system.
La Roche is located at the intersection of Babcock Boulevard and Duncan Avenue in McCandless.
