A power outage in South Park Township and surrounding neighborhoods is affecting more than 4,000 residents and has forced two elementary schools to closed Wednesday.

About 4,100 First Energy/West Penn Power customers are without service after equipment was damaged overnight, the utility company posted on its website.

Students at South Park Elementary Center have the day off after the school was forced to close. South Park High School and Middle School remain open and are operating on regular schedules.

Gill Hall Elementary School in Jefferson Hills is also closed, according to the district website. Teachers are expected to report, and all other district buildings will be in session.

FirstEnergy crews are working on repairs.

Service is expected to be restored by about 1 p.m. Wednesday.
