A playground located within Boyce Park in Plum is expected to reopen this fall, an Allegheny County parks spokesperson said Thursday.

The O’Block Playground, located at 750 Monroeville Trestle Road, has been closed since late July after rain storms pounded the eastern suburbs on July 22. Nearly three inches of rain fell in many areas in the Pittsburgh region.

The playground was one of many of the flood’s casualties. The downpour submerged vehicles, destroyed parks, damaged roads, apartments, homes and businesses.

At O’Block Playground, waters washed out its foundation, destroyed the rubber surface and damaged the sidewalks.

According to Allegheny County spokesman Kevin Evanto, the county hired New Jersey-based Marturano Recreation Company to remove the damaged rubber surface for $8,000. Work on that took place from Oct. 15 to 17.

The same company is working to rebuild the foundation and install a new rubber surface for $80,000. That work began Oct. 23 and is expected to finish Oct. 25.

Once that work is complete, the county’s facilities management department will rebuild the playground’s sidewalks.

Evanto said the county does not have a definite date for reopening.

“But we expect it will be sometime this fall,” he said.
