One person is dead and another injured after a wrong-way crash on Interstate 79 southbound on Tuesday, according to the Washington County Coroner’s Office.

The two-vehicle crash happened just before 2 a.m. between the Canonsburg and Houston exits.

One of the vehicles was driving north on the southbound turnpike, hitting the other vehicle head-on, the coroner’s report said.

The driver of the vehicle that was going the wrong way was not wearing a seatbelt and was killed in the crash. Identification was pending notification of the next of kin.

Another person was taken to a hospital, according to Washington County 911. That person’s condition was not released.

The southbound lanes and Canonsburg on-ramp were closed for several hours after the crash, reopening just before 5:30 p.m.

State police, North Strabane Township Police, Canonsburg Police Department and the North Strabane Township Fire Department responded.

State police are investigating.
