Plum Community Center is collecting clothing and other donations for Meals on Wheels as part of its participation in a national charitable campaign.
People can drop off non-skid socks, scarves, gloves, hats, hand towels and washcloths from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at 499 Center-New Texas Road.
Items will be delivered in gift bags to meal recipients later this month.
The center will also host its second annual Stuff the Trunk event 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday for more donations.
Those efforts, and a recent Meals on Wheels volunteer luncheon, are all part of the center’s participation in Subaru of America’s Share the Love Event, in which the company donates money for every new Subaru purchased or leased from mid-November through early January to the customer’s choice of four national charities including Meals on Wheels.
It’s the 12th year for Subaru’s event, and the fourth year the community center has participated.
The center’s executive director, Karen Hochberg, said they received a little more than $5,000 in grant funding through last year’s event. She hopes this time around is even more successful.
“Meals on Wheels helps people stay in their homes and get meals delivered to them,” Hochberg said “We train people on how to assess how (meal recipients) are doing, and if we think something’s wrong, we can call an alert family member. We’re always looking for volunteers. It’s great that a national corporation like Subaru recognizes the value of Meals on Wheels.”
