The first day of winter is Saturday. Welcome the season this weekend with a few more holiday events.


Angelic

Johnny Angel & The Halos take the stage on Saturday at the Rivers Casino Event Center on the North Shore. The Pittsburgh-based group performs music of the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s. The band has collaborated with musicians such as The Temptations, Chuck Barry, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons and Ray Charles. Jack “Johnny Angel” Hunt leads 10 musicians who play everything from guitar to piano to trumpet to the saxophone.

Santa skate

This is the last Saturday to ice skate with Santa Claus at the MassMutual Pittsburgh Ice Rink at PPG Place, Downtown. There’s plenty of room as the rink is said to be 67% larger than the Rockefeller Center ice rink in New York City. If you don’t have skates, they have 700 pairs for rentals.

Holiday music

The Trans-Siberian Orchestra will perform “Christmas Eve and Other Stories” on Sunday at PPG Paints Arena. The combination progressive rock band and orchestra is bringing its Winter Tour 2019 here with all new staging and effects. The group has played to over 100 million people in more than 80 cities.

Go to market

This is the last weekend to shop the Peoples Gas Holiday Market in Market Square, Downtown. People can peruse the chalets which feature more than two dozen vendors of international and local gifts. Hours are 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and until 8 p.m. Sunday.

For yinz

Pittsburgh Public Theater presents “Yinzer Yuletide,” Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the O’Reilly Theater, Downtown. Check out the theater’s large front windows, which will glow with decorations inspired by old time department store displays. Inside the theater is shopping, a Santa’s workshop gift area for kids, and Nebby and Nice bars offering everything from hot chocolate and Curly Tail coffee, which helps support animal rescue, to craft cocktails. The signature event is the live variety show, “Pittsburgh Lights & Legends,” hosted by WQED’s Rick Sebak.
