Penn State Extension will host the workshop, “Making Cover Crops Pay,” Jan. 21 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Armstrong County Extension Office, 120 S. Grant Ave., Suite 1, in Kittanning.

The workshop is free to the public, but registration is required. A free breakfast will be offered. The workshop is sponsored by Pennsylvania No Till Alliance.

The workshop’s focus is how a cover crop, such as clover, can do more than just prevent soil erosion, according to Justin Brackenrich, agronomy educator and one of the speakers. Some cover crops can scavenge nutrients from the soil and hold them in place for the next cash crop, according to Brackenrich.

The workshop will focus on these uses as well as others, some of which could be profitable.

Other speakers include:

Sjoerd Duiker, professor of soil management and applied soil physics in Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences, will present “What Does Soil Health Mean to Me?” and “Using Legumes for Nitrogen Production.”

Zach Larson, field and forage crops extension educator, will speak on “Making Your Own Cover Crop Mixes” and “Weed Management in Cover Crops.”

Workshop attendees will have an opportunity to discuss their farms and operations during the workshop’s final discussion.
