Fox Chapel Area School District invites community to participate in commencement celebration

Fox Chapel Area graduates will be lauded Sunday with a Community-wide Hat Toss to culminate the Class of 2020 commencement.
A high school graduation ceremony will be livestreamed on the Swift Fox Media YouTube Channel at YouTube.com/c/SwiftFoxMedia, beginning at 7 p.m.
Afterward, special guest Bill Hillgrove, the play-by-play announcer for the Pittsburgh Steelers, will countdown to the hat toss at about 8 p.m.
Residents are encouraged to step outside, throw a hat into the air and cheer for the graduates.
The June 7 ceremony offers two options for seniors to celebrate their achievements, both of which abide by social distance guidelines. District officials still have hopes for an in-person event later this summer, if state restrictions loosen.
On Sunday, graduates can receive their diplomas in a drive-through session starting at 10 a.m. on campus, or, they can participate in an individual recognition ceremony at scheduled times later in the day.
If families choose a scheduled time to receive their diploma, they will hear their student’s name announced and then have photos taken at socially distanced stations. To further abide by the state’s coronavirus-related guidelines, diplomas will be handed out by a family member of each student rather than school administrators.
Faculty and staff from each of the district’s six buildings will be on campus to cheer on the graduates.
Bonnie Berzonski, district coordinator of communications, said administrators have put many hours of planning into properly celebrating the seniors.
“We are taking this one step at a time, and, right now, we have planned for the June 7 graduation. However, we have also reserved two weekends, one in mid-July, and one at the beginning of August, for possible in-person attempts at a graduation ceremony,” she said.
