Power outage affects 30-block area in East End neighborhoods

A cable failure resulting in a pole fire caused a power outage Monday evening affecting a 30-block area in some of Pittsburgh’s East End neighborhoods, according to Allegheny County officials.
Duquesne Light spokeswoman Hollie Geitner said about 1,700 Lawrenceville customers were without power, after fire crews responded shortly after 4 p.m. to a report of a transformer fire near the intersection of 38th and Mintwood streets in Lawrenceville.
Geitner said the day’s hot temperatures caused a cable to fail, resulting in the fire.
An additional 2,300 customers were affected including sections of Highland Park, Morningside, Garfield, East Liberty and Bloomfield, county officials said in a tweet sent Monday evening.
Geitner said power was restored to the area as of 6:30 p.m.
