Lowrie Street bridge to be replaced in Pittsburgh’s Troy Hill neighborhood

Rialto Street will be closed from July 27 through December in Pittsburgh’s Troy Hill neighborhood because a 48-year-old bridge that crosses over it will be replaced in a $1.1 million project.
The Lowrie Street Bridge has been deteriorating in recent years. The project will replace the bridge beams, deck, sidewalks and railings.
The metal stairway connecting Lowrie and Rialto streets also will be relocated to the opposite side of Rialto Street so pedestrians don’t have to cross the street to access the Rialto city steps, according to a news release.
The general contractor for the project is A. Merante Contracting of West Mifflin. Work should be finished by December.
Starting Monday, Rialto Street will be closed to vehicles and motorists should use Troy Hill Road and Route 28. Access to the Rialto Street steps will be maintained during the project, except when the present bridge is taken down.
Traffic on Lowrie Street will be detoured using Ley and Sundeman streets. Port Authority of Allegheny County’s 4-Troy Hill route will maintain service using the detour.
