Westmoreland County saw 16 new cases of covid-19 added to its total Saturday, the Pennsylvania Department of Health reported, with one additional death.

The death is the first death reported in the county since Tuesday.

The county’s death toll now stands at 48.

Through the first half of August, Westmoreland County has only reported more than 20 new cases once, when it reported 23 on Aug. 8.

By contrast, in July, the county recorded 20 or more cases 23 times — nine of which were 30 or more cases.

All of the newest cases are confirmed.

The new cases make a total of 1,609 cases in the county since the new virus was first reported there March 20. Of those cases, 1,565 are confirmed, 44 are considered probable.

A little more than 35,000 people in Westmoreland County have tested for the virus. The positivity rate is 4.6%.

The county topped 1,000 total covid-19 cases July 13 and hit 1,500 cases Aug. 7.
