Steelers fan among finalists for Hall of Fame superfan recognition

Alan Faneca isn’t the only person associated with the Steelers who is a Hall of Fame finalist this year.
Justin Laveing, a 25-year-old Beaver Falls native, has been named one of six nominees for the Ford Hall of Fans, a program that recognizes some of the most passionate NFL fans across the country.
Established in 2019, the Ford Hall of Fans has already inducted one Steelers fan, Rick Holman.
So, what are Laveing’s chances of also being immortalized? Judging from his credentials they appear to be pretty good. Laveing organizes tailgates that practice social distancing as well as gatherings and autograph signings for a Steelers fan club with more than 2,000 members.
“I want to give everything I can to Steeler Nation so that everybody enjoys it as much as I do,” Laveing said.
He’s brought current and former Steelers to his house for autograph signings, including Jeff Reed, Arthur Moats and Randy Grossman, using part of the proceeds from the signings to help Toys for Tots and homeless veterans.
Laveing learned of his Ford Hall of Fans nomination in November when former Steelers wide receiver Lynn Swann showed up at his front door.
“It was absolutely unbelievable,” Laveing said. “I mean I was shaking, my heart was pumping, tears were in my eyes. I just couldn’t believe it. He gave me his jersey and signed it for me. Just that alone was beyond worth it to me.”
Laveving, who works as a loan consultant for Lendmark Financial Services, is more than a super fan. He is also known as “T-Dog,” a moniker he picked up playing football in sixth grade, because he was an offensive and defensive tackle. He went on to play for Beaver Falls High School and in semi-pro ball for the Pittsburgh East Storm and the West Virginia Iron Men.
Laveing said he will find out during Super Bowl week if he is to be inducted. In the meantime Steelers fans can cast votes for him at www.fordhalloffans.com/football.
The five other finalists include fans of the Baltimore Ravens, Cleveland Browns, Arizona Cardinals, Las Vegas Raiders and Dallas Cowboys.
“The 2020 football season presented challenges for everyone associated with the great game of football, but these superfans found opportunities to support their favorite teams in every way possible,” said David Baker, President and CEO of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
“We are proud to join Ford once again in recognizing and honoring fans’ passion, commitment and devotion. We look forward to seeing the outcome of the fan vote and new members to the Hall of Fans this year.”
The winners will be honored at the Pro Football Hall of Fame during 2021 Enshrinement Week.
