A Sheetz gas station could close for up to 11 weeks starting in April so the company can remodel the building.
Brian Soyka, engineering and permitting manager for Sheetz, presented the company’s plans the Monroeville Planning Commission during a Jan. 20 meeting. The plans are for remodeling the site at 3954 William Penn Highway.
Soyka said the project includes revamping the store’s look with brick and stone facades, new sidewalks, updated fuel islands and new underground fuel tanks. The plans also call for removing fuel island canopies that connect to the store.
“So in essence, it’ll all be new but at the same time, with that said, it’s almost like a major maintenance project – pretty much taking everything out and putting everything back in,” he said.
The project does not include the addition of a drive-thru window, he said, and fuel options will not change.
Soyka said the project is one of up to 50 that the company is planning.
Soyka said the project has an approximate start date of April 5. When construction begins, the gas station will be closed 10 to 11 weeks. He said the store’s employees will be notified three weeks ahead of the closure and relocated to other sites.
Nick Ruffner, the company’s public relations manager, said the store is expected to reopen by late June. He said all employees will be given the option to transfer to other store locations in the area. According to Sheetz’ website, there are five sites within miles of the one that will be closed.
Planning commissioners unanimously approved the plans. Council could take action at its Feb. 9 meeting.
