The fledgling Kiski Township Sewage Authority is seeking $50,000 from the township to help cover start-up costs.

The authority formed earlier this year to spearhead a $16 million townshipwide sewerage project.

Township officials hope the infrastructure upgrade will spur development and economic growth, especially along the Route 56 corridor.

The authority needs some start-up money for administrative expenses, said Chuck Rodnicki, a supervisor and member of the new authority.

“The authority is still in the infancy stage,” he said. “We will continue to pursue grant money and other funding.”

Until then, the authority is looking to the township to help out.

The authority’s $50,000 request is for legal and engineering fees and other expenses, Rodnicki said.

Township secretary Patrick Bono said the township is working through the authority’s request.

“The authority will have legal establishment issues, which we will iron out,” he said.

The sewage project will bring public sewage lines to about 700 homes and buildings in the Orchard Hills area, a neighborhood near Route 56 and Florida Avenue, then along Route 56 to the Apollo-Ridge High School campus and other areas off Route 56, according to township officials.

Only about 10% of township homes and businesses are connected to public sewer lines.
