After many TDs at Heinz Field for Pitt, Clairton native Tyler Boyd gets 1st NFL TD at Steelers

Nine of the 22 touchdowns Tyler Boyd scored during a standout college career at Pitt came at Heinz Field. Boyd also won four WPIAL championship games played at the facility, scoring three touchdowns in the 2011 title game win for Clairton.

But over a six-year NFL career that previously featured four games at Heinz Field, Boyd had never scored.

Until Sunday.

Boyd’s 17-yard first-quarter touchdown catch for the Cincinnati Bengals was the first score of the game that ended in a 24-10 loss for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Boyd caught a third-and-2 pass from Joe Burrow at the sticks headed toward the sidelines with multiple Steelers defenders – and few available blockers – in the area. But the 6-2, 203-pound Boyd bounced off of Steelers linebacker Melvin Ingram, reversed field and sprinted into the end zone.

“Yeah, ‘TB’ has been doing that since I got here – he catches something underneath and he goes and tries to run somebody over,” Burrow said. “That’s the kind of guy he is. And I think that’s part of the being from Appalachia, being in that area of Pittsburgh. Tough, you know? TB’s a really, really good player that I’m excited to play with.”

Boyd tied for the Bengals’ team lead with four catches in the win, amassing 36 yards. Through three games, Boyd leads Cincinnati with 14 catches and is second with 141 receiving yards.
