A Sto-Rox high school student was shot and killed Monday afternoon, authorities said, prompting district officials to switch high school students to remote learning for the rest of the week.

Hasson Shackelford, 18, was a senior at Sto-Rox Junior-Senior High School, according to Tribune-Review news partner WPXI-TV. Shackelford was shot in the head along Camp Street in McKees Rocks shortly after 2:30 p.m., according to Allegheny County Police. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition where he later died.

School district officials moved students in the junior and senior high schools to virtual learning.

“Due to the tragedy that occurred in our community today, the junior/senior high school students will participate in virtual classes for the remainder of the week,” district officials wrote on social media around 10 p.m. Monday.

The switch to virtual learning affects students in 7th through 12th grades. In-person classes are set to resume Monday

Allegheny County homicide detectives are investigating the shooting. Authorities did not immediately indicate if there are any suspects. Anyone with information is asked to call the tip line at 1-833-255-8477.
