The day’s arctic chill was no deterrent to attendance at Saturday’s opening reception for “Ah-Ha!”, a members’ exhibition at Greensburg Art Center.
With the center’s parking lot full, attendees had to trek to the gallery after finding spaces in the surrounding neighborhood.
The draw was the opportunity to view works that illustrate the moment in the creative process when the light goes on and the whole thing comes together. (That, and the generous buffet of appetizers and sweets prepared by center members.)
Artists were invited to enter two pieces, either new or previously shown. More than 40 responded, supplying pieces in a variety of 2- and 3-dimensional mediums.
While the show was not juried, entries were judged for cash prizes by Emily Daignault, a visual arts teacher in the Hempfield Area School District.
Daignault awarded first place to “Cat in the Sunlight,” a watercolor by Debbie King, citing the work’s texture, light and composition.
Other honors included:
• Second place: “Hungarian Rhapsody,” oil painting of a violinist by Patricia Dickun, chosen for “beautiful use of light, color and composition.”
• Third place: “Highlights and Shadows,” oil painting of a farmhouse in a vast landscape by H.K. Miller, noted for thick paint application balanced by “incredible attention to detail.”
• Honorable mentions: Marcia Koynok, Brian McCall, Stephanie Oplinger, June Drexler Robertson, Rosemary Sovyak and Michael Walter.
Seen at the opening: Center President Jerry Scorpion, Bob and Pat Majcher, Pamela Cooper, Joe and Olga Herbert, Julianna Eyer, Bob King, Michaelene McWhinney, Linda Blum, Shirleah Kelly, Gene and Nancy Dalverney, Tom Niggel and Pat Morrison.
