To coincide with the Winter Olympics in Beijing, China, Sewickley Academy hosted its own Winter Olympics for the Pre-K through fifth-grade students.

Each class was assigned a country and their Olympic events – speedskating, biathlon, curling, slalom skiing and hockey – were held during physical education classes Feb. 9-17. Student-athletes received lanyards and badges identifying the countries they represented, and Olympic finalists for each sport from each grade received medals crafted by ceramics teacher David LaLomia.

All Pre-K and kindergarten students had the opportunity to decorate their own medals.

Students’ families gathered in the Events Center Gymnasium for opening ceremonies on Feb. 8 and for Closing Ceremonies and medal distribution on Feb. 25, both of which were also live-streamed for anyone unable to attend.
