After a two-year hiatus because of the pandemic, the Greensburg Ministerium’s portrayal of the Passion of Christ will return Friday.

The “Way of the Cross” drama will begin at 11:30 a.m. on the steps of the Westmoreland County Courthouse on Main Street.

Actors will travel on Otterman Street, Pennsylvania Avenue, West Third Street and Maple Avenue for the seven-scene drama, which depicts the events leading up to Jesus’ crucifixion.

It will conclude on East Second Street at First United Methodist Church of Greensburg, where spectators are invited to a worship service titled “Reflections on Good Friday.”

The drama, which will last 30 to 45 minutes, will temporarily stop traffic in downtown Greensburg.

For two decades, numerous Greensburg churches have joined to present the drama. Rick Zabrosky has portrayed Jesus for the majority of the reenactments.

Zabrosky hopes this year’s drama builds community and fellowship in the aftermath of the pandemic.

“With the pandemic and everything that’s been going on, it’s been pretty depressing the past couple of years. … (The drama) is a meaning of hope as part of the Easter season,” Zabrosky said.

The drama aims to reenact the scriptures while encouraging spectators to reflect on Jesus’ sacrificial death and resurrection.

Other biblical figures portrayed in the drama will include Pontius Pilate, Roman soldiers, Mary, female followers of Jesus and high priests.

“It’s a great educational tool and a great tool to help, hopefully, bring people into the church and get excited about Christ and religion,” Zabrosky said.
