A Pittsburgh man has been arrested for allegedly stabbing another man multiple times at a store inside Monroeville Mall.

John Malcolm Smith, 40, is charged with aggravated assault in connection with the incident Saturday around 5:15 p.m. at All-Star Elite.

According to the criminal complaint, Smith and another man were in the store shopping when the two saw each other and begin arguing.

The victim told police Smith picked up a pair of scissors from inside the store and stabbed him during the altercation.

The victim said he knows Smith “from the neighborhood and that they do not like each other,” the complaint read.

Police said the man was located in a bathroom and was treated by EMS. He sustained at least two slashes to his left forearm and one puncture wound to the left side of his back near his armpit. He declined to be transported by ambulance.

Police said they spoke with All-Star Elite employees, who said Smith was the aggressor in the altercation.

Monroeville Police Chief Doug Cole confirmed that there have been other incidents between the two men outside of the mall, and that Smith was on federal probation at the time of the stabbing.

“It was a random incident, the fact that they ran into each other there at the mall,” Cole said.

Online court documents indicate Smith is being held at the Allegheny County Jail and was denied bail.

His preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 6 before Monroeville Magistrate Jeffrey L. Herbst.
