A Derry Township street is set to close beginning Tuesday as PennDOT extends detours and traffic restrictions for other work areas in Westmoreland County — including a stretch of Interstate 70.

A section of Hickory Avenue, also know as North Valley Street, is scheduled to close at 7 a.m. Tuesday to allow Norfolk Southern Railway crews to do maintenance work on a track crossing. The closure will be in place between First Avenue and Third Street and is expected to end at 7 p.m. on Sept. 9.

A marked detour will direct traffic along Fourth Avenue, Leo and Chestnut streets and Route 982.

I-70 lane restrictions to continue

Daytime single-lane restrictions that began on Interstate 70 on Aug. 22 are slated to continue through mid-September, but they will not be in force for the Labor Day weekend, according to PennDOT.

The restrictions are affecting both eastbound and westbound traffic on the interstate in the area of the Madison and Yukon interchanges. The restrictions, in effect between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., are needed as crews install a permanent barrier wall, replacing temporary barriers in the work zone.

Nighttime single-lane closures, between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m., are set to begin on Sept. 12 and should continue through late September as crews from Trumbull Corporation paint lines and install rumble strips on the section of interstate.

The work is part of a project that includes reconstruction of nearly 4 miles of the interstate — widening the median to a minimum of 10 feet, providing 12-foot outside shoulders and adding an eastbound auxiliary lane between the two interchanges. Reconstruction of the interchanges includes lengthening of ramp acceleration and deceleration lanes.

Other road closures

Closures of portions of Boquet Road in Penn Township and Darlington Road in Ligonier Township are being extended through early October, weather permitting. In each case, the closure is in effect while crews replace a deteriorated metal cross-pipe with a new concrete pipe.

Boquet Road has been closed since April 18 between Frye and Walton roads. A posted detour uses Claridge-Export and Claridge-Elliott roads, Route 993 and Business Route 66.

Darlington Road has been closed since July 25 between Ridge Road and Route 30. A detour is in place using routes 30 and 711.
