The North Allegheny School Board is in discussions with staffers and union representatives regarding the fate of the district’s library secretaries, according to board President Richard McClure.

Librarians had been told in August that their positions could be eliminated by the school board in October, but the issue was not listed on the Oct. 19 school board agenda.

“The board and administration are pleased to share that discussions have been held with the union and staff to work toward the best solution for the members and the district,” McClure said at the board meeting.

The secretaries have received support at previous school board meetings as well as in an online petition.

An organization named Keep NA Libraries Strong said that upper administrative staff told the library secretaries on Aug. 18 that the board intended to vote in October to eliminate their positions, effective July 1, 2022.

A recent post on the organization’s website stated that the library secretaries were informed on Oct. 18 that the school board would not be voting on this matter at the October meeting.

Editor’s note: This story has been updated to correct the date that the library secretaries’ positions were said to be eliminated. The correct date is July 1, 2022.
