A representative of the U.S. Secret Service will lead a discussion for North Allegheny parents about “Internet Safety for Kids” from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Dec. 5 at the Carson Middle School auditorium.

Topics discussed include sharing location on apps like Snapchat; anonymous accounts on social media that “allow” bullying and parent apps to monitor children’s use of social media.

“Today’s students use tablets, computers, and smartphones for both educational and entertainment purposes. By providing our parents and guardians with some internet safety tips, we can help ensure our students make the most of their online experience,” said school Superintendent Dr. Melissa Friez.

Parents can learn about how parental safety settings on devices can be circumvented. The discussion will provide information as to how to lock down purchasing of apps and about online radicalization. Discussion leaders will demonstrate how to identify online misinformation and how algorithms affect access to content.

The discussion will be led by a senior special agent and investigative analyst from the Cleveland Field Office of the United States Secret Service. The forum is hosted by the North Allegheny School District and the NA Citizen’s Advisory Committee. It’s part of the Communications Connections series at North Allegheny.

Tips also will be provided for parents or kids getting their first device.

“While the internet can be a wonderful place to learn and social media creates online connections with friends and family, it’s important that we make our community aware of the dangers to create a safe online experience,” Friez said.

Parents are required to RSVP for this event by visiting the Community Connections page at www.northallegheny.org. Parents will have an opportunity on the RSVP form to submit questions prior to the event.
