Local Girl Scouts celebrated their inaugural Pinewood Derby races in January at Cross Roads Presbyterian Church in Monroeville, with help from the Cub Scout Pack 184.

The turnout was 64 pinewood cars from across the Gateway Service Unit, which serves girls in Monroeville and surrounding areas.

First place overall for fastest car was awarded to Sophia Klavora. Evie Morgante finished second, and Ayla Pasqualini, third.

The service unit has held many activities in the wake of the pandemic, but the girls really needed a night where to get together and have fun as a group, according to event coordinator Anne Klavora.

Plans are being made to send local girls to the Girl Scouts of Western Pennsylvania’s first-ever Grand Prix races in June at Grove City. The girls already are brewing ideas on how to design their cars for next year’s race.

Members of Pack 184 also held a Pinewood Derby the same day as the girls. They worked on putting together 26 cars for the Cub Scouts and even allowed parents to try their hands at racing cars of their own.

Using the opportunity as a STEM activity for the kids, they had to work to design a car that would travel fast, fit criteria and also look great. Of course, it was up to the Scouts which of those they prioritized.

Each Scout was able to compete against others of the same age in their den, and six of the boys qualified to race their cars in the Laurel Highlands Council’s district races this spring.
