A motorist was killed in a collision with an oncoming vehicle Wednesday afternoon in Washington County, officials said.

Edward Michael King, 58, of Avella was pronounced dead at the scene in Independence Township, according to Washington County Coroner Tim Warco. A ruling on the cause of death was pending completion of an autopsy.

Three other motorists who were injured were taken to hospitals for treatment. One was taken by ambulance, the other two by medical helicopters, according to a Washington County 911 dispatcher.

The crash occurred shortly after 4 p.m. as King was driving east near the 400 block of Washington Pike and collided with a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction, Warco said. He said King was driving alone; he was not wearing a seat belt.

State police are investigating.

Firefighters from Avella, Franklin and West Middletown departments assisted at the scene.
