The Republican ticket for the Baldwin Borough council race has Rebecca Conley running uncontested — she is the only Republican on the ballot for three open spots on the November ballot according to the Allegheny County Office of Elections unofficial candidate list.

On the Democratic ticket, there are five candidates vying for three spots: Patricia Boyer, Paul J. Hayhurst, Denise Maiden, Angelo Mancuso and Elliot J. Rambo.

The terms are four years.

Why did you decide to run for election? To help the fire department, which I have been an active member at Baldwin Fire Department #105 since 2018 and I help with administrative and fundraising activities. I was one of the original members that started the Baldwin Community Events Advisory Committee in 2020 that brought back Community Day, Baldwin mile race, home decorating contest, fire works, to name a few. I was active on the five member events committee for two years and will continue to volunteer my services. I wish to continue to keep our police department fully staffed. As a Baldwin Library liaison, I look forward to working with their staff as the library is critical to our children and the entire community as an information and activities resource.

What is the biggest issue that needs to be addressed? I would like to continue to be a member of the Baldwin Borough council to keep our community moving forward, keeping it a great place to work and live.

What should voters know about you? I have lived in Baldwin for 42 years and raised my daughter, who graduated from Baldwin High School. My daughter, her husband and my twin grandsons also reside in Baldwin. I am retired from the Baldwin Whitehall School District, where I worked for 22 years in the administration office and was also a union representative for 15 years. I will listen to all sides of any issue and I will always vote for the best interest of our residents.

Why did you decide to run for election? Baldwin is a great community. I believe we can always be better. We become a better community by lending our skills and energies to that goal. I am currently in my 12th year as Baldwin Borough Public Library board member. I have been board president for seven of those years. I believe a seat on Baldwin Council is the next step.

What is the biggest issue that needs to be addressed? Maintaining financial stability is critical for the health and well being of any community. It allows a community to fund projects and prepare for growth in the future. Broadening our tax base will lessen the pressures on the current taxpayers and potentially give us the option to try new projects that otherwise are out of reach.

Why should people vote for you? My years on the library board have shown my ability to lead and drive projects to completion. I have a proven ability to compromise, collaborate, lead and listen to get things done. I will be fiscally responsible and work to ensure a vibrant, active and safe community for all residents.

Denise Maiden

Why did you decide to run for election? I initially ran out of love for this borough and a desire to pay back for 45 wonderful years here. It was a great place to raise my three children, Tom, Keith and Kelly, and I want to make sure it always will be. I launched — and chair — the Community Events Advisory Committee, a group of dedicated women building community. It is to lock down all the things we have started, and complete those that are still in the works, that makes me request four more years.

What is the biggest issue that needs to be addressed? As a business owner, I became quite good at keeping everything at the high standards I hold while minimizing costs. I am a problem solver and local government needs that now more than ever. But something else has become a big need everywhere, even local governments. I am dedicated to looking out for the needs of every resident and to listening with empathy and respect. It just might be the most important thing I am doing.

Why should people vote for you? A vote is such a huge responsibility. I have watched immigrants tear up when they get to vote for the very first time at an advanced age. Find out what your representatives achieve. I am proud to list some of mine on my Facebook page. I put my heart and soul into every vote I cast on council on your behalf.

Angelo Mancuso

Why did you decide to run for election? I decided to run for election for my love of the community, to keep Baldwin safe and clean place to reside.

What is the biggest issue that needs to be addressed? The biggest issue that needs addressed is transparency between the borough and its residents.

Why should people vote for you? I’m a lifelong resident with a vested interest in the community’s well-being. I will be the bridge of communication, listening to the residents, fostering trust and forming relationships.

Why did you decide to run for election? To continue to serve the constituents that I call my neighbors. Baldwin Borough is a Banner Community of the South Hills and we need leaders who will make common sense decisions to keep it that way.

What is the biggest issue that needs to be addressed? Keeping our taxes reasonable for middle class families while at the same time maintaining necessary operations. This balance is critical to delivering the best police, fire and EMS services, ensuring our roads are paved and plowed and offering activities for all residents.

Why should people vote for you? People should vote for me because I am deeply in tune with the issues affecting our community and am dedicated to ensuring we keep Baldwin a safe and affordable place to live and raise a family. I was born and raised here and am a proud product of Baldwin.
