A teacher in the Allegheny Valley School District has earned herself a free trip to Disneyland this week.

McCall Emerick, an elementary school science teacher, has been named as one of the 100 exceptional teachers from around the country who will participate in the Disney 100 Teacher Celebration at Disneyland in California.

The Allegheny Valley School Board unanimously approved Emerick’s participation in the event, which takes place from Thursday to Sunday.

The event, part of the Walt Disney Co.’s observance of its 100th anniversary, recognizes teachers who reflect the creativity and imagination of Walt Disney during Teachers Appreciation Week.

Teachers from the elementary, middle and high school levels were encouraged to enter the competition by submitting an inspiring essay.

As part of the four-day, three-night stay Disneyland paid for by Disney, the teachers will get an inside look into Disney Imagination Campus workshops and offerings.

“It’s about innovation, creativity — it’s pretty darn impressive,” Superintendent Patrick Graczyk said.

The only cost to the district will be for a substitute teacher during Emerick’s absence.
