Several Pittsburgh senior centers will undergo improvements with the help of state grant money from the Department of Aging.

The Mt. Washington Healthy Active Living Community Center was awarded $50,000 for improvements, including new windows, flooring, a shuffleboard court, raised garden beds and a kiln, according to state Sen. Wayne Fontana’s office.

The West End Healthy Active Living Community Center will use a $90,200 grant to replace flooring, install LED lighting and replace a ceiling after the roof is replaced, Fontana’s office said.

Macedonia Family and Community Enrichment Center, a privately-run center in the city’s Bloomfield neighborhood, received over $84,000 for programs and services. East Liberty-based Vintage Inc. received a nearly $100,000 grant for capital projects and renovations, according to Fontana’s office.

Statewide, 48 senior community centers received awards totaling $2 million.

Other grant recipients include New Kensington Center for Active Adults, West Newton Center for Active Adults and New Florence Center for Active Adults in Westmoreland County, Canonsburg Senior Center in Washington County and Center at the Mall in Beaver County, according to the Department of Aging.

“Our Senior Community Centers are pillars in our communities and to the older adults they serve,” Secretary of Aging Jason Kavulich said. “Whether it’s a meal, health and wellness activities or socializing, these centers help our seniors thrive and continue to live independently as they age.”
