Monroeville Public Library is hosting the following events:
• Game Nights, 6 to 8:30 p.m. June 8 and June 27. The library will provide spaces for a variety of board games, card games, tabletop games, and party games like Jackbox. Guests are welcome to bring their own games or try what the library has available.
The gatherings are designed to foster connections, facilitate new friendships, and provide a relaxed and accepting space. They take place the fourth Tuesday and second Tuesday of each month in Johnna’s Room. For more information, contact littlec2@einetwork.net.
• “The Adventures of Dwight D. Eisenhower” (hybrid event), 7 p.m. June 8. Historical researcher Susan Cannavino presents information about the 34th president. Discover more about his life and career, filled with duty, sacrifice and passion. Cannavino will share amusing stories of First Lady Mamie Eisenhower during her time in the White House.
While this is an online event, accessible through the library’s website, it will be streamed live in the Gallery Space at the library for those who would like to attend.
• “Change: How to Flow With It and Grow With It” (hybrid event), 1 p.m. June 10. Counselor Eileen Colianni will help attendees examine their approaches to change and learn effective ways to navigate it. The event link can be found on the library’s calendar.
• Author Talk: “My Two Elaines” by Martin Schreiber (in-person, registration preferred), 5:30 p.m. June 13. A former Wisconsin governor, Schreiber witnessed his wife, Elaine, transform from the graceful hostess of the executive residence to someone who sometimes didn’t recognize him as her husband. Like many individuals thrust into the world of Alzheimer’s, Schreiber had little knowledge of the disease as he cared for his spouse of over 60 years.
He will discuss his experiences and lessons learned, aiming to help others avoid the same steep learning curve. Following the seminar, Schreiber will answer questions, provide suggestions and be available for book signing.
Registration begins at 5:30, and the seminar starts at 6. Attendees who RSVP through the library’s website will receive a free copy of the book.
• Author Talk: “Prophetic Voices: Renewing and Reimagining Haftarah” by Rabbi Barbara Symons of Temple David in Monroeville (hybrid event), 7 p.m. June 21.
Haftarah, meaning “conclusion,” refers to sections from the prophets of the Hebrew Bible that are read following Torah readings in Jewish services. In “Prophetic Voices,” a diverse group of contributors —including rabbis, cantors, scholars, educators, activists and poets — provides concise commentaries on each haftarah, showcasing its relevance to the present.
The book includes new haftarot (plural of “haftarah”) for each Sabbath and holiday, as well as haftarot for the Jewish American calendar, ranging from Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) to Pride Month to Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The readings are complemented by scholarly essays that contextualize the Prophets and examine the role of prophecy in Reform Judaism.
Symons looks forward to an interfaith dialogue exploring the wisdom and resonance that can be found through a deeper examination of our religious traditions. The event is in-person at the library or online via Zoom.
