A former Pittsburgh Department of Public Works warehouse is set to be revamped as an office and retail space.
The city’s Urban Redevelopment Authority on Thursday approved plans to sell the site at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Dinwiddie Street on the border of the Crawford-Roberts and Uptown neighborhoods to a company affiliated with Pittsburgh-based Bridging the Gap Development.
The authority is selling the 0.4-acre property — which includes a vacant lot and the empty warehouse — for nearly $1.1 million, plus costs, according to information presented to the URA board.
The developer plans to add two stories to the building.
Derrick Tillman, CEO of Bridging the Gap, said he hopes to see the redevelopment include office and coworking space, a training center focused on clean energy jobs and a coffee shop.
The URA estimated the project will cost about $16.6 million. The authority is providing a loan of nearly $1.6 million to help finance the effort.
The site has been “awaiting development for several years,” said Tom Link, chief development officer at the URA.
The URA board unanimously approved the sale Thursday.
