Leetsdale residents in need of lawn care may be able to get help for free through a new borough initiative.
The inaugural Community Cleanup, a day for volunteers to cut grass and other minor landscaping per resident request, is scheduled for Sept. 9.
Helpers will get their assignments around 9 a.m. at the borough building, 373 Beaver St.
Gloves and bags and light refreshments will be provided.
Mayor Sandra Ford said the idea was originally to help seniors, but was expanded to help those with health issues and other complications.
“We see many properties that are in need,” Mayor Sandra Ford said. “We have residents complain about properties that make Leetsdale look bad. We can call our code enforcement company.
“However, we realize that some people are senior, have no family members/friends and have no resources to do the work. Turning them into code enforcement just makes their problems worse. Ultimately it leads to getting fined which still does not solve the problem.”
Council vice president Osman Awad said it may be possible to use public works equipment to help with the initiative.
Those details are still being worked out. All crews will have a supervisor to ensure safety.
