Several Gateway School District schools were placed on lockdown Monday morning as Monroeville police chased down a wanted man.

Police Chief Doug Cole said officers responded to a domestic incident around 10:25 a.m. at the Cambridge Square Apartments.

Officers identified Leonard Robinson III, 22, of Clairton, as part of the altercation.

Cole said he was wanted by Monroeville police on simple assault and harassment charges. Robinson also had warrants from Allegheny County Police for a probation violation and Wilkins police for failure to appear in court on drug charges.

Cole said officers searched the area and later apprehended Robinson along Monroeville Boulevard.

Gateway Assistant Superintendent Dennis Chakey said the high school, middle school and Cleveland Steward Elementary were placed on a “perimeter lockdown” due to the police activity in the vicinity.

“During the perimeter lockdown, classes continued as normal within the school; however, visitors were not permitted to enter the building,” Chakey said.

Cole said the district’s actions were out of an abundance of caution, and students were not in danger Monday.

Robinson was taken to the Allegheny County Jail.
