Pittsburgh police filed charges Wednesday against a North Oakland woman who they say drove her car into a woman crossing Centre Avenue in a wheelchair earlier this month and then drove away.
Police said Kelda Gorman was crossing Centre just after 7 a.m. Nov. 13 when she was struck by a car driven by Natalie Weber, 79, according to a criminal complaint filed in the case.
Weber ran a red light at Centre and North Craig avenues, the complaint said. She did not stop to check on Gorman after striking her, police said. Gorman was not injured, police said.
Attorney Stephen Colafella, who represents Weber, reached out to police on Friday. Weber told police that she didn’t see Gorman because her windows had frost and fog on them, according to the complaint.
“She stated that she recognized she ‘hit something,’ but did not realize it was a disabled person in a wheelchair,” the complaint said. “She stated that she felt terrible since she was notified of this.”
Colafella could not be immediately reached for comment Wednesday afternoon.
Weber faces charges including not yielding to a pedestrian in a crosswalk, accidents involving damage to an attended vehicle, running a red light, careless driving, failure to stop and give aid, court records show. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Jan. 10.
