The Pittsburgh Penguins placed defenseman Will Butcher on waivers Tuesday afternoon.

Should he go unclaimed, the team can formally assign him to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League after 2 p.m. Wednesday.

A free-agent signing this past offseason, Butcher has been sidelined since suffering an undisclosed injury during the summer and has yet to play in any games this season.

At the moment, Butcher, 28, is designated “injured non-roster.”

The left-hander is signed to a one-year contract that carries a salary cap hit of $775,000.

Before joining the Penguins, Butcher previously played for the New Jersey Devils and Buffalo Sabres.

Note: The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins terminated the professional tryout contract of defenseman Mark Pysyk. A 10-year veteran at the NHL level, Pysyk attended the Pittsburgh Penguins’ training camp on a PTO and suffered an undisclosed injury during his only preseason appearance Oct. 24. In eight AHL games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Pysyk had no points, four penalty minutes and five shots.
