The beleaguered Monongahela Incline will get new life again.
The incline, which connects Pittsburgh’s Station Square to the city’s Mount Washington neighborhood, is set to reopen sometime this weekend, pending a state inspection, Pittsburgh Regional Transit announced Thursday.
Transit officials said repairs are nearly complete and state inspection workers will be onsite Friday morning.
The 154-year-old Mon Incline has been besieged by closures over the last few years. It closed on Jan. 2 following a failure of the electrical and mechanical systems that slow the cars as they near the stations, the transit agency said.
Last October, the Mon Incline was closed for a week for routine maintenance. Before that in August, it was closed for another week after condensation build up caused by an air conditioning unit attached to the incline’s electrical equipment triggered an emergency brake.
From August 2022 to March 2023, it was closed for seven months while an $8.2 million renovation project was completed.
Shuttle buses are run when the Mon Incline has been closed for maintenance.
Pittsburgh Regional Transit said it’s the oldest continuously operating funicular in the nation, and has transported millions of riders.
