State Rep. Joe McAndrew was appointed chair of the House subcommittee on Public Transportation, his office announced Feb. 9.

The appointment coincides with the release of Gov. Josh Shapiro’s proposed 2024-25 budget, which calls for $283 million in new state funding for public transportation and nearly $1.5 billion over five years. Almost $40 million would go to Pittsburgh Regional Transit, which serves the 32nd District’s constituent communities — Penn Hills, Oakmont, Verona and parts of Plum.

The Democratic lawmaker also is assigned to the Children and Youth, Gaming Oversight, Health and Liquor Control committees.

Voters sent McAndrew to the House in a February 2023 special election following the death of longtime Rep. Tony DeLuca in October 2022. He faces a reelection challenge from Penn Hills Mayor Pauline Calabrese, who announced her candidacy Jan. 24. Primaries are scheduled for April 23.
