The Westmoreland Symphony Orchestra will perform the third installment of its inaugural Academy Concert series Thursday.
The performance, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Greensburg Garden and Civic Center, is titled “Dances and Madrigals.” It is free to the public, but donations will be accepted.
The Westmoreland Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1969 by local musicians. The Academy Concert series is meant to connect audiences with more intimate concerts showcasing a wide variety of music, Executive Director Michael Rozell said in a statement.
The series features the orchestra’s Academy Quartet, which includes Jorie Butler-Geyer and Leah Givelber on violin, Warren Davidson on viola and Cecilia Caughman on cello.
Thursday’s performance features the work of four composers — Lera Auerbach, Bohuslav Martinu, Felix Medelssohn and Joseph Haydn. Auerbach’s “Three Dances in the Old Style for Violin and Cello” and Martinu’s “Three Madrigals for Violin and Viola” inspired the title of the performance.
The Academy Concert series kicked off in late October. It will conclude with a performance titled “Trio Sine Nomine” at 7:30 on May 23 at the Greensburg Garden and Civic Center.
The orchestra will perform its season finale, “Verdi’s Requiem,” on April 20 at the Palace Theatre in downtown Greensburg — featuring opera soloists and the orchestra’s more than 65-member Chamber Singers group.
