A bicyclist was hospitalized in critical condition Tuesday after a semi-truck struck him while he crossed a Downtown Pittsburgh intersection.

Pittsburgh police, firefighters and first responders were dispatched just before 10:30 a.m. to the intersection of Liberty Avenue and Stanwix Street for reports of the collision, police spokeswoman Emily Bourne said.

The cyclist — an adult male who police did not name — attempted to cross Stanwix Street in front of a Pittsburgh Regional Transit bus and a semi-truck with an attached flatbed, both of whom were stopped side-by-side at a red light on Liberty Avenue, Bourne said.

It appears the vehicles got the green light when the cyclist attempted to cross Stanwix Street in front of them, Bourne said.

Medics rushed the cyclist to an area hospital, where he immediately went into surgery, Bourne said. The truck driver, who police also did not name, stayed on the scene and cooperated with police.

The investigation is ongoing.
