A fire at a McCandless apartment building displaced 11 families Saturday night.
Two residents were evaluated at the scene for smoke inhalation but weren’t transported for treatment, according to Matthew Williams, chief of the Peebles District Volunteer Fire Company.
Peebles firefighters were among the first responders called at about 9:45 p.m. to the three-story Duncan Avenue building, which is part of the Royal Manor Apartments complex. Crews had the fire under control in about a half hour, Williams said.
A stove in a basement-level apartment was the source of the flames, according to Williams. He said the fire was contained to the apartment’s kitchen, but there was heavy smoke through most of the building.
The Red Cross offered assistance to those who were displaced.
“They put up one family that had nowhere to go,” Williams said. “We’re working to see if the families are able to get back in in 48 hours or so to the apartments that weren’t directly affected by the fire.”
