The Frazer supervisors want to make it easier to develop land near the Pittsburgh Mills mall and the Route 28 corridor through the township.

With the mall building foundering, officials say, other development in the area is important. So they’re considering changes to allow for residential construction in the township’s Corridor Perimeter Overlay district.

An overlay district is a zoning area that is added on top of an existing zoning district to create special regulations for that specific area. The township’s overlay district includes portions of land around the mall and Route 28.

Supervisors will vote on the zoning amendment at their meeting Tuesday night.

“In order to promote economic development in the township such as that, we decided to amend our zoning ordinance to permit that type of thing,” Lori Ziencik, township secretary and supervisor, said of residential development.

Ziencik said the change does not come after any specific event or plan, but supervisors and township officials are hoping the ordinance change will promote some development.

“We did not have actual plans (for development),” Ziencik said.

She said residential development behind the Walmart at the Pittsburgh Mills complex is possible, but the township has not received any formal development submissions.

“We’re hoping to receive official plans,” Ziencik said. “I hope we do in the near future, but I don’t have any idea of when that would occur.”

The meeting is open to the public and will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Frazer Township Municipal Office at the Pittsburgh Mills mall.
