Springdale residents can learn more about a new garbage collection contract during a meeting Tuesday.
Representatives from the borough’s new garbage collection provider, Belle Vernon-based County Hauling, will give a presentation and oversee a question-and-answer session during Tuesday’s council meeting, said Ro Rozier, a spokeswoman for the company.
“This is a new contract that is beginning on Jan. 1, and we will have two to three representatives at the meeting on Tuesday to answer any questions,” Rozier said.
Refuse rates in Springdale will increase about 28% next year, or $15 per quarter, from $54 to $69, under the new contract. The borough bid with Cheswick and Springdale Township and, officials say, the joint effort prevented an even larger increase.
Councilman Joe Kern said the meeting will allow County Hauling representatives to address residents and explain the changes.
“We figured we’d have it at a regular meeting so people can ask questions as well,” Kern said.
“It’s an effort of transparency with the people.”
Borough officials accepted the bid in May. County Hauling was the lowest of two bids.
At that time, officials said they declined to accept a bid that included large household items because it would have cost roughly $50,000 more over the years.
