The Pittsburgh Pirates added a left-handed arm to their bullpen Monday night, signing 33-year-old Tim Mayza to a major-league deal pending a physical, a source confirmed to TribLive.
Mayza, a veteran of 367 MLB games, went 0-2 with a 6.33 ERA last year, splitting time with the Toronto Blue Jays (35 games) and New York Yankees (15).
Designated for assignment by Toronto over the summer, he landed with the Yankees and posted a 4.00 ERA in 18 innings.
Last November, Mayza departed the Yankees organization, electing free agency.
While he had his struggles last season, Mayza was an effective relief option for the Blue Jays over several years, including 2023, when he went 3-1 with a 1.52 ERA in 69 innings, recording 22 holds, 53 strikeouts and 15 walks.
In 2022, he was 8-1 with a 3.14 ERA, and in 2021, he went 5-2 with a 3.40 ERA and career-low 0.98 WHIP, making more than 60 appearances in both seasons.
Mayza, a 12th-round pick by the Blue Jays in the 2013 MLB Draft, is 20-9 during his career with a 3.88 ERA over 301 2/3 innings.
Per Statcast, Mayza relies primarily on two pitches: a sinker, which he throws approximately 72% of the time, and a slider, which he uses 27% of the time.
