Letter to the editor: Trump’s ‘Riviera of the Middle East’ plan is sad

Has anyone considered the utter irony of our modern populist movement being led by billionaires? Historically these movements involve the common man rising up against the wealthy elite as the middle class got poorer and the rich took all the money (or worse, didn’t care how impoverished their actions left the ordinary citizen).
Yet every announcement of more tariffs is cheered by the MAGA movement; every announcement of more “DOGE cost cutting” is applauded. Both of these announcements harm the middle class on multiple levels yet are welcomed because President Trump is doing it — no thought needed!
Trump’s latest missive of taking Gaza to turn it into the “Riviera of the Middle East” doesn’t cause disgust among his followers? Did anyone think of the billions of dollars that will be diverted from Americans into this venture so that a place that ordinary people could only dream of visiting is turned into a playground for the uber rich?
I believe Jared Kushner, who let’s not forget received a $2 billion investment from the Saudis when his father-in-law left office, is a driving force behind this idea. Does anyone else remember how many times when Trump first ran for president, as well as during his first term, that he reiterated he will stop our country’s “nation building”? Yet here we are. What changed his mind? It’s not to help the Palestinians; his plan has them relocate them to other countries. And MAGA cheers!
As our president would say, SAD.
