The Allegheny Valley School District is moving forward with its plan for a proposed multipurpose turf field and track at the high school.
The board this week authorized Field Turf USA to proceed with construction drawings and permitting for the proposed turf project at the soccer field, which is across the street from Springdale Jr.-Sr. High School.
The district will pay Field Turf USA $55,000 for the drawings and permitting.
“We’ll go ahead with phase two,” said board President Nino Pollino.
The school board on Nov. 19 approved an agreement with Field Turf for professional design and engineering services related to the field project.
That agreement, which cost the district about $20,000, allowed for surveying, infiltration and soils testing at the soccer field. The process took about six to eight weeks.
New Kensington-based Canzian Johnston and Associates is providing coordination, architectural oversight and a site survey at the soccer field on an as-needed basis. The district will pay Canzian $165 an hour.
Canzian is also overseeing the district’s demolition of the former Colfax Upper Elementary School. Kane Specialty Group of Pine is leading that project, which has been ahead of schedule.
It’s anticipated that the demolition will be complete before April 10.
Though no decision has been made, a facility close to the high school could host Dynamo football games and practices in the coming years.
The district terminated its lease with the borough for use of Veterans Field, and the high school football team played its games this fall at stadiums outside the district.
Also at the meeting, the district acknowledged the girls soccer team, which won the WPIAL Championship this fall and was the state runner-up. The team was awarded the Extra Mile Award and was recognized for the positive impact they had on the community.
Pollino noted that many of the district’s students participate in sports and other extracurriculars, where they learn about sportsmanship and teamwork.
“We want to have first-class classrooms and facilities for these kids,” Pollino said. “They deserve it.”
