Allegheny County’s portal to entice federal employees to explore their options with the county launched Thursday.

A similar portal was also created by Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro.

The idea is to provide a soft landing for any of the 16,000 federal employees in the Pittsburgh region who may lose their jobs.

“While federal leaders are creating an atmosphere of chaos and cruelty in the federal government, we are demonstrating that we can run a government that is both competent and compassionate at Allegheny County,” said County Executive Sara Innamorato. “We are committed to being an employer that treats its workers with dignity and respect, so in turn they can offer excellent service to the more than 1.2 million residents of Allegheny County.”

The county has more than 6,000 employees and has more than 1,000 current job openings, spokeswoman Abigail Gardner said.

Among those needed most are nurses and health and human services employees, Gardner said.

Government employees based in Washington or elsewhere may also want to consider moving to the Pittsburgh area, County Manager John Fournier said.

“Allegheny County government is ready to welcome federal employees with expertise in economic development, health, human services, veterans services and more,” Fournier said.
