Plan for Pittsburgh: GOP candidates Moreno, West detail visions ahead of primary

May’s primary will mark the second time Moreno, a former Pittsburgh police officer, has run for mayor on the GOP ticket. He lost to Mayor Ed Gainey in 2021.

Thomas West, who owns a business in Lawrenceville, has no political experience but believes Pittsburghers could do with a fresh perspective after decades of Democratic leadership.

Moreno believes hiring new recruits for the city’s police force, which has dwindled, is a top priority.

West worries that Pittsburgh is on the brink of financial distress and points out that both Democrats in the race have been heavily involved in the city’s budgets.
