Heavy storms that rolled through the area nearly a week ago still are impacting daily life in the Alle-Kiski Valley.

Highlands High School remained closed Monday, with district officials blaming an ongoing power and internet outage.

“This is all from last week’s storm,” Superintendent Monique Mawhinney said.

“We are under the mercy of West Penn Power.”

According to the utility company’s website, the high school is among 1,158 properties that remain in the dark after last week’s storm.

In the immediate area of the high school, there are less than 20 customers without utilities, according to West Penn Power.

Crews are in the area working. It was not determined yet whether high school students are expected to have in-person classes Tuesday.

School leaders said the middle school academic honors ceremony, which was scheduled for Monday at the high school, will be rescheduled.

The high school spring band concert will also be pushed back.

West Penn Power is offering free water and ice to customers without power. A list of participating retailers is available online.

Other districts that went remote for the day include Shaler Area and Fox Chapel Area.
